Beer is comprised of various ingredients that can trigger throat irritation among those who have certain medical conditions. The usual conditions that can trigger a sore throat after drinking beer include grain allergy, sulfite sensitivity and alcohol intolerance.
The individual must avoid consumption of beer until he/she has been properly assessed by a doctor. Some of the conditions that can trigger a sore throat due to the swelling can result to breathing difficulties. If the individual develops other symptoms after ingesting beer, a doctor should be consulted.
If the individual is sensitive to certain grains, he/she might develop a sore throat after ingesting beer. Wheat, barley and other grains are utilized in creating beer. Even though sore throat is an indication of grain allergy, the individual might develop other symptoms if he/she is allergic to one or more grains present in beer.
Majority of the symptoms from this allergy causes swelling and inflammation in the soft tissues. The individual develops skin rashes, hives, nasal congestion, digestive issues along with a sore throat during an allergic reaction.
Can sulfite sensitivity cause sore throat?
Sulfite sensitivity involves an erratic response of the body to certain foods or beverages that contain sulfites. As preservatives, sulfites are added to foods and beverages to prevent discoloration and prolong shelf-life.
Sulfites are known to occur naturally in beer and capable of triggering side effects after ingestion. The typical symptom of sulfite sensitivity is asthma which causes constriction of the airways that leads to throat discomfort, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.
Alcohol intolerance is a hereditary condition that triggers several symptoms due to the absence of a specific enzyme in the digestive system. The deficiency can cause the alcohol to stay undigested and unabsorbed in the digestive tract.
Intolerance to alcohol might also be due to histamine. This is a chemical by-product of the brewing process that can instigate itchiness, tingling or even a sore throat. Take note that histamine is the chief chemical in the body responsible for triggering most of the allergy symptoms.
Considerations to bear in mind
If the individual has a sore throat for an extended period of time, it might be an indication of a serious health issue. A doctor should be consulted if the sore throat lasts for a few days.
In case the sore throat is accompanied by other symptoms such as rashes, high fever or swollen lymph nodes, a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.
