What is food poisoning?

Always bear in mind that food poisoning affects millions of individuals every year. This condition occurs once an individual consumes beef that has been contaminated by bacteria, toxins or other infectious organisms. Within 4-36 hours of consuming the contaminated beef, the individual will develop diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and stomach pain. Remember that there is no cure for food poisoning aside from getting enough rest, drinking more fluids and a bland diet for a few days. In case the symptoms are severe, a doctor should be consulted.

Food poisoning that develops after eating beef can be prevented. Most cases of food poisoning from beef are linked to undercooked meat, lack of hygienic measures or the use of contaminated utensils. It is recommended to clean dishes carefully, wash hands after handling meat, using a cooking thermometer and cooking beef to 160 degrees.

Avoid using the same plate for raw beef and cooked beef. In addition, avoid eating beef that has been left raw in the refrigerator for more than 2 days. Meat that has a foul odor or taste should not be eaten.

What is meat allergy?

If an individual is allergic to proteins or carbohydrates present in beef, he/she might develop digestive issues within a few minutes of consuming beef products. Take note that meat allergies occur due to hypersensitivity of the immune system that triggers the body to react to beef as if it is a threat.

The body releases antibodies that fight off the beef proteins. The antibodies trigger other chemicals that lead to inflammation in the digestive system that result to vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and cramping. A doctor should be consulted right away or seek emergency care if the individual experiences an allergic reaction right after eating.

Meat intolerance

Food intolerance prevents the digestion of a particular food and can make the individual ill. If the individual is intolerant to beef, the digestive system could not produce enough of the required enzymes needed to digest it properly. The proteins are not properly digested, thus allowing them to interact with bacteria that lead to an increase in symptoms such as gas, nausea, bloating and diarrhea. Individuals with irritable bowel syndrome can also develop these symptoms.
