Symptoms of egg white allergy

It is a known fact that allergies usually occur once the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless material or substance as a threat to the body. As a result, the body releases chemicals that will fight off the perceived threat, causing the manifestation of the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Take note that there are various allergens that range from airborne particles as well as ingredients in foods. As one of the common allergens, eggs have been known to trigger allergies in many individuals all over the globe. Understandably, both the white and yolk can be the cause but egg white allergy is more common.

Allergic asthma

Once an individual has eaten eggs, allergic asthma can likely occur especially if the individual is highly sensitive to the allergen. Take note that this reaction will occur once the bronchial airways become overly sensitive to the allergen. This is usually linked with allergens that are inhaled such as pollen, but can also be triggered if an individual consumes an allergen. The individual must avoid eating the white part of an egg as a preventive measure.

Individuals who are prone to severe allergic reactions are prescribed with an EpiPen that they always bring wherever they go.

This would result to the constriction of the airway muscles, causing the inflammation along with the increase of the mucus production. This bodily reaction will cause shortness of breath, coughing and chest tightness. In such cases, the individual can be given bronchial inhalers and prescription medications in order to ease the severity of the asthma-like symptoms.

Appearance of hives

Hives manifest due to the inflammation of the skin that results to red-colored, itchy welts. Hives is considered as the most common skin reaction to almost all types of allergies, including egg white allergy. This is triggered once the immune system releases chemicals into the bloodstream the moment the allergen is detected. Take note that histamine is the one responsible for triggering the allergic reactions. As a first aid measure, you can provide over-the-counter antihistamine medications to help relieve the discomfort.

What happens during a severe allergic reaction?

In case a severe allergic reaction occurs, it can often lead to anaphylaxis which is considered as a life-threatening condition that would require immediate medical care. Once the immune system releases chemicals to fight the allergen, it can release these chemicals at a fast rate in which the body progresses into the state of shock.

During anaphylaxis, the blood pressure can drop drastically while the airways can narrow, thus making breathing difficult. If this is not treated right away, it can lead to loss of consciousness and even death. Individuals who are prone to severe allergic reactions are prescribed with an EpiPen that they always bring wherever they go. Once the first symptoms of an allergic reaction manifest, you can use the EpiPen on the thigh since it will help counteract the symptoms until medical care can be provided.
