Always bear in mind that a nerve can be pinched or irritated by the surrounding muscle or bone from various conditions such as overuse, poor posture, aging, heredity, obesity or injury.
The C5 nerve which is situated in the neck is commonly linked with the signs and symptoms of a pinched nerve in the shoulder area. The symptoms of a pinched nerve can either be momentary or permanent. In case the symptoms persist or causes significant discomfort, there might be an underlying condition and it is important to consult a doctor.
If there is a burning sensation in the shoulder region or shooting pain that radiates down the arm, it might be caused by a pinched nerve. The individual will also suffer pain due to the muscle spasms caused by the compression of the nerve. In most cases, the shoulder pain due to a pinched nerve can be accompanied by pain in the neck and headaches.
Pain is how the brain shows that there is something wrong with the body. Once there is shoulder pain, it can indicate that a nerve is inflamed or compressed. In case the nerve compression lasts for a long time, the pain will not diminish due to permanent damage to the nerve.
There is also weakness in the muscles in the shoulder region or the arm. This indicates a pinched nerve. In some cases, weakness of the muscles can develop into full loss of muscle function. In scenarios where weakness is experienced, the individual might not be able to lift his/her arms above the head or extend the arm to reach for objects. Additionally, if the weakness radiates to the lower extremity of the arm, the individual can drop items or experience problems when picking up items. If the individual experiences muscle weakness that limits using the limbs, it is best to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
Tingling sensation and numbness
The tingling sensation and numbness can be experienced if the individual has a pinched nerve in the shoulder area. Take note that the sensation of pins and needles is considered as a common sign of a pinched nerve. The individual can feel these symptoms in waves or it can be constant depending on the severity of the damage to the nerves. If the tingling sensation and numbness does not diminish after resting, it can indicate that there is an underlying condition and it is a must to seek medical care.
Even if these signs and symptoms are present, it is still best to consult a doctor if you are in doubt. With proper assessment carried out by a doctor, it can help determine the actual cause whether it is a pinched nerve or there is an underlying medical condition present that needs immediate emergency care.
