What is rice milk allergy?

Individuals who are allergic to milk are not likely to have rice milk allergy since rice milk does not contain dairy constituents. Rice milk is derived from the rice plant, thus those who are allergic to rice could not consume rice milk. It is important to schedule an appointment with a doctor in order to undergo testing either a blood test or skin test in order to determine the exact allergen.

Rice allergy occurs more in countries where rice is a staple food, particularly in Asian countries such as Japan. Take note that rice allergy is considered as a rare type of allergy. If the parents of the individual have food allergies, there is a high likelihood that he/she will have food allergies as well but might not have the same allergies. Unlike with other types of allergies, rice milk allergy occurs more often in adults than in children.

Food intolerance can lead to indigestion when the individual consumes rice milk if the body has difficulty digesting some of the components present in rice, but this is not an actual allergic reaction. The rice pollen from the rice plant can trigger an allergic response that is similar to what others experiences upon inhalation of pollen such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and difficulty breathing.

Symptoms

The symptoms of rice milk allergy typically manifest within 30 minutes up to a few hours after ingesting rice milk. The symptoms include hives, facial swelling, wheezing, throat swelling, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and stomach cramping. In severe cases, the skin can turn blue due to lack of oxygen and the individual might collapse. In severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis, it would require immediate emergency care. By enrolling in an emergency course that tackles allergies, you are prepared to help out during emergencies.

What happens during cross-reactions?

If an individual has rice milk allergy, he/she must avoid all rice products including those that are made out of rice flour that are usually found in spring rolls and rice noodles. The foods that are included in the same family such as wheat, corn, barley, soybean, maize, oats, rye and triticale can also trigger an allergic reaction. Individuals who have rice allergy can also suffer from an allergic reaction to apples and peaches. In some cases, those who have rice allergies can consume wild rice but others could not.

Important considerations to bear in mind
