Pedestrian Killed in Tour Bus Crash Was Given CPR

A pedestrian who lost his life following a tragic tour bus collision in downtown Vancouver was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene, as police continue to appeal for witnesses.

Investigators with the Vancouver Police Department are working to determine what led to the deadly crash near Canada Place.

Deadly Crash Near Canada Place

The incident occurred Sunday morning shortly before 10 a.m. on Canada Place Way near Burrard Street. A bus owned by the Vancouver Trolley Company struck a group of pedestrians and a parked SUV near the downtown Vancouver waterfront.

A 49-year-old pedestrian was killed, while two others sustained injuries. Police confirmed all three victims were tourists from Massachusetts and were related. An elderly man remains in serious condition in hospital, while a 15-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses told police the victims appeared to be loading or unloading luggage into the SUV when they were struck. Following the collision, the victims were trapped underneath the bus.

CPR Administered at the Scene

First responders quickly arrived and were able to pull the 49-year-old man from beneath the bus. CPR was immediately administered in an attempt to save his life, but his injuries were too severe and he could not be revived.

The other two victims were transported to hospital for further medical treatment.

Investigation Continues

Police confirmed the bus involved was operating as a free shuttle service to the Capilano Suspension Bridge.

Vancouver Trolley Company general manager Stuart Coventry said the company is fully cooperating with investigators from the Collision Investigation Unit. He confirmed the driver has been with the company for seven years and has an excellent driving record. The driver remains employed but is currently taking time off following the incident.

“He and all of the staff at Vancouver Trolley are devastated by this very difficult situation,” Coventry said.

Witnesses Asked to Come Forward

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information related to the incident to contact investigators at 604-506-2024.
