A young child is recovering in hospital after being pulled from a backyard swimming pool in Surrey, B.C., less than 24 hours after another tragic pool-related incident in the same city.

According to CTV British Columbia, emergency responders were called just after noon to a residence in the 9600 block of 129 Street, where they found the child in serious condition after she was removed from the water.

The BC Ambulance Service confirmed that the child was transported to BC Children’s Hospital by a specialized infant transport team. While officials have not confirmed the child’s exact age, reports suggest she is approximately two years old.

The homeowner told CTV News that the young girl slipped beneath a pool cover while visiting the residence. Bystanders acted quickly, pulling her from the pool and immediately beginning CPR before paramedics arrived. The child and her parents were reportedly visiting from Calgary at the time.

This near-drowning occurred less than a day after a heartbreaking incident elsewhere in Surrey. In that case, a 20-month-old toddler was pronounced dead after falling into an outdoor pool. His grandmother, who reportedly could not swim, entered the water in an attempt to rescue him and was later placed on life support.
