Debbie Hawryliw, who works near the intersection, said she was jolted from her desk by the sudden sound of the crash. She described hearing screeching tires, followed by a loud impact and screams.

“It was horrific sounding,” Hawryliw said. “It sent a shock from the bottom of your spine to the top of your head.”

Bystanders Provide Critical First Aid

In the moments following the collision, bystanders acted quickly. Hawryliw said several people carrying first aid kits rushed to the scene and worked to stabilize the injured man while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Police confirmed the adult pedestrian was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the child involved in the crash was not seriously hurt.

Hawryliw also noted that the driver appeared to be elderly. The intersection was closed for several hours as police reconstruction specialists conducted a detailed investigation due to the involvement of pedestrians.
