AED Saves the Life of a Miramichi Man
A Miramichi man is alive today because an automated external defibrillator (AED) was close by and people around him knew how to act quickly. This real-life emergency shows how CPR training and access to AEDs can make the difference between life and death.
Quick Actions That Saved a Life
Eugene Manuel, 46, was competing in a fitness challenge at his local gym in Miramichi on July 11 when he suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating, and he collapsed without warning.
Bystanders immediately stepped in and began performing CPR. At the same time, someone ran next door to a nearby Tim Hortons to retrieve an AED. The device was used within minutes, delivering a life-saving shock that helped restart Manuel’s heart before paramedics arrived.
Emergency responders later confirmed that the early CPR and quick use of the AED were critical in saving his life.
Why the AED Was There
The AED used during the rescue had been installed in memory of Pat O’Kane, a local man who suffered a fatal cardiac arrest downtown six years earlier. At the time, no defibrillator was available in the area.
In a remarkable coincidence, O’Kane’s daughter, Cailin O’Kane, was participating in the same fitness challenge when Manuel collapsed. Her father’s legacy directly contributed to saving another life.
Recognizing Life-Saving Efforts
Following the incident, Ambulance New Brunswick held an event to thank the bystanders whose fast thinking, CPR skills, and use of an AED made the rescue possible. Their actions demonstrate how everyday people can make an extraordinary difference during emergencies.
Life-Saving Skills Anyone Can Learn
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere — at gyms, workplaces, schools, or public spaces. Knowing how to perform CPR and properly use an AED gives bystanders the confidence to act when every second counts.
Hands-on training helps ensure you can respond quickly, calmly, and effectively in critical situations.
