A tragic incident along Calgary’s Bow River has claimed the life of an angler who fell into the water while fishing near Graves Bridge in southeast Calgary.

Emergency crews were dispatched after receiving reports that two people were in the river. The man was unable to pull himself out and was quickly swept away by the current.

Without hesitation, the witnessing angler entered the river to try to help. Despite the dangerous conditions and frigid temperatures, he managed to swim to the submerged man, pull him onto the shore, and immediately begin CPR.

River Safety and the Importance of CPR Training

Cold, fast-moving rivers like the Bow River present serious hazards, even for experienced anglers. Sudden immersion can cause cold shock, rapid muscle fatigue, and disorientation—Making self rescue extremely difficult.

This incident highlights the Importance of CPR training. Immediate bystander CPR can be critical during drowning and cold-water emergencies, helping to maintain circulation and oxygen flow until emergency responders arrive. Learning these skills through accredited training programs, such as CPR and AED courses offered by Calgary First Aid, can help prepare people to respond confidently in real emergencies.
