CPR Given to Woman After Car Plunges Into River
A tragic early-morning crash in St-Charles-sur-Richelieu, about 50 kilometres northeast of Montreal, has claimed the life of a 38-year-old woman after her vehicle plunged into the Richelieu River.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. when the woman’s car struck a Hydro pole, cutting power to nearby homes. Moments later, the vehicle swerved off the road and plunged upside down into the river, becoming submerged in approximately four feet of water.
Watery Ordeal and Rescue Attempt
Neighbours contacted police after hearing a loud bang and noticing their electricity had gone out. A Sûreté du Québec (SQ) officer was the first to arrive at the scene and immediately entered the cold, murky water in an attempt to rescue the driver.
The officer broke the driver’s side window but was unable to locate the woman inside the vehicle. Due to the extremely cold conditions, he was forced to retreat and was later treated for hypothermia.
After the vehicle was towed from the river, the woman was discovered in the back seat. Emergency responders immediately attempted CPR before transporting her to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The victim was identified as a resident of Sorel.
Investigation Ongoing
Police continue to investigate what caused the woman to lose control of her vehicle. Authorities say all possibilities remain under consideration, including driver fatigue, a Sudden medical emergency, or a momentary distraction. An autopsy has been scheduled to help determine the exact cause of death.
Why CPR Training Matters
While CPR does not always result in survival, immediate action can significantly improve outcomes during cardiac arrest, drowning, or traumatic emergencies. In situations like this, trained bystanders and first responders may be the only chance a victim has before Advanced medical care arrives.
Learning proper chest compressions and CPR techniques helps individuals respond quickly and confidently when seconds matter most. Residents interested in developing these lifesaving skills can explore CPR and AED training options through Calgary First Aid by visiting their CPR courses page.
