Jogger’s Life Saved by Quick CPR from City Worker and Bystander

First aid training is not just for adults or healthcare professionals. Sometimes, it’s a teenager with the right knowledge, confidence, and quick instincts who makes all the difference.

That was the case for Carter Short, a 14-year-old student from St. John’s, whose first aid training helped save a life during a school event.

A Normal Day Turned Emergency

The incident happened during Grandparents’ Day at King’s-Edgehill School in Windsor, Nova Scotia. The school had invited students’ grandparents to campus to spend the day together, share meals, and enjoy time with their families.

During lunch, Carter was seated with his grandmother, friends, and their grandparents. The atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful—until Carter noticed something was wrong.

A friend’s grandfather, John Graham, suddenly showed signs of distress after taking a bite of potato salad. His expression changed, and he pushed his chair back from the table. Carter could immediately tell this was not normal.

“He had this shock on his face,” Carter later explained. “He was scared. He was confused.”

Training Takes Over

Carter didn’t freeze. He didn’t panic.

Having completed four separate first aid and life-saving courses, Carter recognized the signs of choking right away. Without hesitation, he jumped up and began administering back blows—exactly as he had been trained.

After the third firm back blow, the lodged piece of food was dislodged. Graham was able to breathe again.

This type of confident response is taught in comprehensive first aid programs, such as a Standard First Aid and CPR course, where students learn how to recognize emergencies, respond quickly, and apply proper techniques when seconds matter.

Why Back Blows Matter

Many people assume that the Heimlich manoeuvre is the first step when someone is choking. However, first aid organizations such as St. John Ambulance teach that up to five firm back blows should be attempted first. If the obstruction is not cleared, abdominal thrusts may then be required.

Carter followed these guidelines correctly—and they worked.

Once the danger passed, Graham spit out the piece of potato and thanked Carter repeatedly. Carter’s response was simple and humble: he was just doing what he had been taught to do.

A Surprise Recognition

Months later, Carter was sitting at a year-end school assembly when he noticed a man on stage he didn’t recognize. The school had not announced a guest speaker, and the man was not a teacher.

Then Carter noticed the large red cross on the man’s jacket.

The visitor was Ancel Langille, a Red Cross manager overseeing the Atlantic provinces. He was there to present Carter with the Red Cross Rescuer Award, recognizing his calm thinking and decisive action.

A Reminder for Everyone

Emergencies don’t come with warnings. They can happen anywhere—at school, at home, or during an ordinary meal.

“It happens out of nowhere,” Carter said. “You can’t predict it. Everyone should know how to do simple first aid.”

His story is a powerful reminder that first aid training saves lives, regardless of age. With the right education and practice, anyone can step in and help when it matters most.
