Islanders Honoured for Life-Saving CPR at Kensington Auction

Two Prince Edward Islanders were honoured for their life-saving actions after a man collapsed during a public auction in Kensington. Their quick thinking and CPR training played a critical role in keeping the man alive until paramedics arrived.

When Seconds Counted, They Acted

The incident occurred during a busy auction when a man suddenly collapsed in front of attendees. According to rescuer Thomas Smallman, many people present were unsure how to react.

“No one was really doing anything,” Smallman said.

Smallman, a trained firefighter, immediately stepped in along with Marlene Lawrence, an auction house employee. Lawrence checked the man for a pulse and found none. Smallman noticed the man’s lips and earlobes turning blue and purple — clear signs of cardiac arrest.

Without hesitation, they began CPR.

Within minutes of starting chest compressions, Smallman saw colour return to the man’s face, showing that oxygenated blood was circulating again. Their calm and decisive actions kept the Man alive until emergency medical responders arrived.

Recognized for Life-Saving Training

For their courageous response, Smallman and Lawrence received Canadian Red Cross Rescuer Awards. Smallman accepted his award at a ceremony at Fanningbank, presented by Antoinette Perry. Lawrence was unable to attend the ceremony but was also recognized for her role.

Smallman has since retired from the O’Leary Fire Department and now works as a school bus driver, continuing to serve his community.
