Man19 Charged With Impaired Driving in Fatal Richmond Hill Crash
A devastating impaired driving collision in Richmond Hill has left one man dead and five others injured, highlighting once again the serious and preventable dangers of driving under the influence.
According to CBC News, the crash occurred on Sunday night along Yonge Street, south of Jefferson Sideroad. Emergency crews were called to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m. following reports of a fiery, multi-vehicle collision involving four vehicles.
One Dead, Five Injured in Multi-Vehicle Collision
York Regional Police confirmed that the victim who died at the scene was a 44-year-old Richmond Hill resident. Two passengers travelling in the same vehicle—a 40-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy—suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital.
Three additional people involved in the crash were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Several witnesses who saw the collision immediately rushed to help. Police reported that bystanders provided first aid and emergency care to injured victims before paramedics arrived and continued treatment.

Chain-Reaction Crash Involving Four Vehicles
Police say the collision caused a violent chain reaction involving:
a white Mercedes,
a grey Hyundai,
a red Toyota Sienna van, and
a white Mazda.
The white Mazda was driven by the man who was pronounced dead at the scene and also carried the seriously injured woman and child. Police have not confirmed whether the three occupants were related.
The driver of the grey Hyundai and the driver and passenger of the white Mercedes suffered minor injuries. The two occupants inside the red Toyota Sienna were not injured.
Serious Criminal Charges Laid
The accused driver, a 19-year-old man who was operating the white Mercedes, suffered only minor injuries. He was treated at hospital, released, and is scheduled to appear in a Newmarket courtroom.
Charges laid include:
impaired driving causing death,
two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm,
criminal negligence causing death, and
two counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
Police later added three additional charges of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
Police Condemn Impaired Driving
York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe described the incident as a tragic and preventable loss for the family and the community.
He emphasized that impaired driving remains unacceptable and continues to cause serious harm despite ongoing education and enforcement efforts. Police reiterated their message: never drive after consuming alcohol or drugs.
Investigation Ongoing
The force of the crash scattered debris over a wide area, with an engine discovered approximately 100 metres south of the collision site. York Regional Police’s major collision unit continues to investigate.
Yonge Street was closed in all directions overnight to allow investigators to process the scene and reopened early Monday morning.
