A shocking act of violence interrupted a peaceful morning mass at Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal when a priest was stabbed while delivering a live-streamed service. Thanks to immediate intervention and first aid, the priest survived with minor injuries.

Attack During Live Service

The incident occurred on March 22, 2019, as Father Claude Grou, rector of the oratory, was preparing to proclaim the Gospel before approximately 60 parishioners. According to witnesses, a man suddenly stood up from a pew, approached the altar, and pulled out a knife.

Adèle Plamondon, who had just completed the day’s reading, said she immediately recognized the danger and ran from the area screaming to alert security. The suspect passed a barrier into the sanctuary and stabbed Father Grou twice in the chest before security guards quickly restrained him.The attack was broadcast live on Catholic television channel Salt + Light, meaning viewers watching from home also witnessed the incident.

Immediate First Aid Response

Father Grou was treated at the scene and transported to hospital by ambulance. Witnesses said he was conscious but in shock. His injuries were later confirmed to be superficial because the knife broke during the attack.

This incident highlights how important it is for people in public spaces to understand emergency response. Knowing how to act quickly, control bleeding, and Provide CPR can make a critical difference before paramedics arrive.   Arrest and Community Response

Police confirmed a 911 call was placed around 8:40 a.m., and the suspect—a 26-year-old man—was already restrained by security when officers arrived. He was taken into custody and interviewed by investigators.

The Archdiocese of Montreal later confirmed Father Grou’s condition was stable and requested prayers for his recovery. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau both condemned the attack and expressed their support.

A Reminder About Emergency Preparedness

Saint Joseph’s Oratory, Canada’s largest church and a major pilgrimage site, is a place dedicated to peace. This event serves as a reminder that emergencies can happen anywhere—and being prepared with first aid and CPR knowledge can save lives.
