VPD Identifies Man Killed in Downtown Eastside Shooting
Vancouver police have identified a man who died following a shooting in the city’s Downtown Eastside. The incident occurred late Friday night at the Savoy Hotel on East Hastings Street.
Incident Details
Officers from the Vancouver Police Department were called to the hotel after reports that bear spray had been deployed inside the building, making it difficult for people inside to breathe. Upon arrival, police found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.
Due to the hazardous conditions indoors, officers moved the victim outside and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to save his life.
Emergency Response Outcome
The man was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later. Police later identified the victim as Joseph Butinski, a 62-year-old Vancouver resident. Investigators have stated that the shooting does not appear to be random, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
According to a report published by the Vancouver Sun, the incident remains under investigation, and police are continuing to seek information related to the case.
