Dominion Celebrates a Community Builder: Frank Canova Turns 80
On January 17, the Dominion Italian Community Hall will be filled with music, laughter, and familiar faces as the community gathers to celebrate a truly special milestone—Frank Canova’s 80th birthday.
For more than six decades, Frank Canova has been a pillar of the Dominion community. A lifelong volunteer, educator, and leader, he has organized countless events and initiatives for others. Ironically, this celebration marks the very first time an event has been organized in his honour.
The idea came from his daughter, Vanessa Canova, who felt that her father’s 80th birthday deserved more than a quiet family gathering. After some reflection, Frank agreed—not for recognition, but for the opportunity to celebrate with the community he loves so deeply.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Community
Frank served as a Town of Dominion councillor from 1983 to 1993 and played a major role in shaping the town’s cultural and civic life. He helped spearhead early community celebrations that eventually evolved into the well-known Seaside Daze festival.
“It’s a milestone for sure. I’m still here, thank God. I’ve got my health,” Frank said.
“I love my community. I absolutely love Dominion, and I hope they come out to celebrate with me.”
As a second-generation Italian Canadian whose grandparents immigrated from Northern Italy in the 1880s, Frank has devoted much of his life to preserving Dominion’s Italian heritage. He has served as president of the Italian Community Hall for 25 years, making him the longest-serving president in its history. In addition, he has volunteered with numerous community boards, church committees, and non-profit organizations.
Educator, Mentor, and Leader
For 30 years, Frank worked as a vocational school teacher, helping students who had not completed Grade 12 gain confidence and practical skills in math and science.
“I loved every minute of teaching,” Frank said.
“When former students stop me years later and tell me I helped change their path—that means everything.”
His daughter, Vanessa, believes her father’s impact speaks for itself.
“My dad’s life story can be summed up by perseverance, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to community.
His life’s work has strengthened institutions, preserved heritage, and enriched the lives of countless individuals.”
Community, Preparedness, and Looking Out for One Another
Strong communities built on people who look out for one another—not only through leadership and service, but also through preparedness. Whether at a community hall, church gathering, or family event, emergencies can happen without warning.
Being prepared with proper first aid and CPR training allows individuals to respond confidently when it matters most. Comprehensive programs such as Standard First Aid and CPR training equip community members with essential, life-saving skills.
Perseverance Through Adversity
Born with Erb’s palsy due to complications at birth, Frank has lived his entire life with limited use of his right arm. Encouraged by his father to persevere and remain independent, he learned early on that determination and hard work could overcome challenges.
That mindset carried him through higher education, a long teaching career, public service, and decades of volunteer leadership.
“I was thinking the other day of everything I have,” Frank reflected.
“And I thought, You made it.”
Still Moving, Still Dancing
Now at 80 years young, Frank remains active and engaged—an avid e-bike rider, enthusiastic line dancer, and firm believer in staying mobile.
“I really believe you have to stay moving or you’re done.”
The celebration will begin with a meet-and-greet from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by dancing and light refreshments. Frank has only one request for his birthday: no gifts—just people.
A Story Worth Sharing
Frank Canova’s story is one of perseverance, service, and deep-rooted community pride. His upcoming celebration is not just a personal milestone—it’s a reflection of the countless lives he has touched through teaching, volunteerism, and leadership.
