Community Champion Frank Canova Celebrates 80 Years of Service in Dominion
Frank Canova has spent more than six decades giving back to the community of Dominion. On January 17, friends, family, and neighbours will gather at the Dominion Italian Community Hall to celebrate a milestone few have earned so completely—his 80th birthday.
Despite organizing countless events over the years, this celebration is something new for Canova. As the long-serving president of the Italian Community Hall and a dedicated community leader, he has always focused on bringing people together for others. Planning a party for himself, however, was never on his list—until his daughter stepped in.
Last year, his daughter Vanessa suggested that his 80th birthday deserved more than a quiet family gathering. After some reflection, Frank agreed.
“It’s a milestone for sure,” he said. “I’m still here, thank God. I’ve got my health. I lost my wife about three years ago, but I’m still pushing through. I love my community. I absolutely love Dominion, and I hope they come out to celebrate with me.”
A Life Rooted in Community
A former Town of Dominion councillor from 1983 to 1993, Frank has been deeply involved in local leadership, education, and volunteer work for most of his life. A second-generation Italian Canadian, his grandparents immigrated from northern Italy in the 1880s to work in the coal mines—helping shape both his family’s story and Dominion’s history.
Frank followed a path of service early on. Raised in a deeply community-minded household, he watched his mother volunteer extensively with their church. Inspired by her example, he began volunteering as soon as he was old enough and went on to found a youth Christian group while still in high school.
That commitment never faded. Over the years, Frank became a vocational school teacher, spending 30 years educating students who hadn’t completed Grade 12—many of whom still stop him today to thank him for changing their lives.
Communities are built not just through events and leadership, but through care, preparedness, and people looking out for one another. Skills such as CPR and AED use are an important part of that readiness, helping everyday citizens respond when emergencies happen.
Many Canadians choose to build those skills through CPR and AED training programs like those offered by Winnipeg First Aid Preserving Heritage and Leading with Purpose
Frank’s dedication to preserving Dominion’s Italian heritage has been a defining part of his legacy. He joined the Italian Club early on and has now served as president of the Italian Community Hall for 25 years—the longest in its history. Under his leadership, the hall has remained a cornerstone of cultural life and a designated municipal heritage site.
He has also served on numerous boards and committees, including CAPE, the Italian Heritage Committee, and local playground and church organizations. As a town councillor, he helped launch events that later evolved into the beloved Seaside Daze festival.
Overcoming Adversity with Determination
Frank’s life has not been without challenges. Born with Erb’s Palsy due to nerve damage at birth, he has had limited use of his right arm his entire life. Rather than letting that define him, his parents—especially his father—instilled a strong sense of perseverance.
“He made me do things that took me longer than others,” Frank said. “He made me capable.”
That resilience continues to define him today. Now in his 80th year, Frank remains active, enjoys line dancing, rides his e-bike, and believes strongly in staying mobile and engaged.
“I really believe you have to stay moving—or you’re done.”
A Celebration of Gratitude
Saturday’s celebration will begin with a meet-and-greet, followed by dancing and light refreshments. Frank has made it clear he wants no gifts—just the presence of the people he has spent a lifetime supporting.
“I put a lot into this community,” he said. “All I want is for people to come out and dance with me.”
As Frank reflects on his journey, gratitude stands out most.
“I made it,” he said. “I feel blessed—to have family, to be respected, and to be part of the community I love.”
