Teen bystander among victims of the shooting

Three people were injured during a targeted shooting near Broadway and Ontario Street in Vancouver on Saturday night, two of whom were innocent bystanders caught in the violence.

Police say a Vancouver man in his 20s was the intended target of the shooting. He was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and is known to police. Investigators believe there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and this individual.

The other two victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A 15-year-old boy from Coquitlam was driving through the area when he was struck by gunfire. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. In a later update, police confirmed the teen was not expected to survive his injuries.

A third victim, a Vancouver man in his 30s, sustained minor injuries. He was treated at the scene and released.

“This is bad,” said Jason Robillard, speaking at a press conference the following day. He described the shooting as brazen and confirmed that it was a priority investigation. More than 30 officers were assigned to the scene as police worked to determine exactly what happened.

Witness Attempts CPR Amid Safety Concerns

One witness described rushing to help a victim who had collapsed outside a nearby Scotiabank. While on the phone with 911, the witness attempted to begin CPR. However, before starting chest compressions, they noticed a firearm tucked beneath the victim’s shoulder. Dispatchers immediately instructed the witness to stay back for their own safety.

Police have not confirmed whether any of the victims were armed.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. Dozens of officers and several ambulances responded, and multiple blocks of East Broadway were taped off well into Sunday afternoon. Bus routes in the area were temporarily detoured, causing confusion for commuters.

Residents described the incident as frightening, noting that the area was busy with people out on a Saturday night when the shots were fired.
