Suspect Charged After Fatal Shooting Outside Surrey Hotel

A 22-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder following a deadly daylight shooting outside a Surrey hotel that claimed the life of a 29-year-old man.

Johnny Steven Drynock, 22, was charged after months of extensive investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Police say Drynock was identified through surveillance footage released earlier this year that showed a man believed to be the shooter. He had been in custody in Merritt since April 8 on an unrelated matter and was scheduled to appear in court on May 19 in connection with the murder charge.

The Incident

The fatal shooting occurred on the afternoon of March 13 outside the Comfort Inn & Suites near Fraser Highway and 166 Street in Surrey. When Surrey RCMP officers arrived at the scene, they found Birinderjeet Justin Bhangu seated in his vehicle and suffering from critical injuries.

Officers immediately began performing CPR while emergency medical services were called. Bhangu was rushed to hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, he later died from his injuries.

IHIT stated that while a specific motive had not been confirmed, Bhangu was known to police and his death was believed to be linked to a criminal lifestyle.

Family Statement and Community Impact

In a statement released on behalf of Bhangu’s family, loved ones expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing him as a loving, respectful son, brother, and friend. They said the tragedy had permanently changed their lives and emphasized that he did not deserve to be taken in such a “horrendous” way.

While the murder charge brought some relief, the family acknowledged that the pain of their loss would continue. They also thanked IHIT and members of the public for their assistance in identifying the suspect.

“Bringing forward these charges today on the individual responsible for this senseless act of violence has brought some justice to Birinder’s family and loved ones.”

Why First Aid and CPR Training Matters

This tragic incident underscores the importance of immediate first aid and CPR in emergency situations. The actions taken by Surrey RCMP officers—administering CPR before paramedics arrived—demonstrate how critical early intervention can be when seconds matter.

While not every outcome can be changed, prompt first aid and CPR can significantly improve survival chances in cases involving severe trauma, cardiac arrest, or sudden medical emergencies.

By enrolling in a Standard First Aid and CPR course, individuals gain hands-on training in CPR, AED use, and emergency response skills needed in real-life situations like this one. Comprehensive training helps build confidence and preparedness—whether at home, at work, or in the community.

When a life is on the line, first aid knowledge is invaluable.
