Regina Man Thanks Quick-Thinking Bike Patrol Officers for Saving His Life with CPR

Quick action, proper training, and being in the right place at the right time made all the difference for Regina resident John Klein.

Klein is alive today because two Regina Police Service bike patrol officers recognized the signs of cardiac arrest and immediately began CPR after finding him in distress at Wascana Park.

A Medical Emergency During Canada Day Celebrations

On July 1, during Canada Day celebrations, 34-year-old Klein was riding his bike through Wascana Park when he suddenly realized something wasn’t right. He began experiencing what he later learned was a cardiac event. Feeling weak and disoriented, Klein stopped riding and sat down on a park bench.

For several minutes, he remained helpless and alone, unable to call for help as his condition rapidly worsened.

That’s when two bike patrol officers — Const. Anthony Rodier and Const. Aaron Robertson — came across Klein while patrolling the busy park. The officers immediately recognized that he was in serious medical distress.

Immediate CPR Saved His Life

Without hesitation, the officers began performing CPR. Their quick response kept Klein alive until paramedics arrived on the scene and transported him to hospital for further treatment.

Klein later shared that he shudders to think about what could have happened if the officers had not been nearby.

“I might not have been able to return to work,” Klein said. “I might have been in Wascana Rehab as a tube-feed or something. It could have been pretty serious.”

Thankfully, Klein made a full recovery.

A Letter of Gratitude and a Powerful Reminder

In August, Klein wrote a formal letter of thanks to Regina police, which was later shared during a police board meeting. He also met the officers in person to personally express his appreciation.

“I grew up learning that thank-you letters are important when somebody does something nice for you,” Klein said.

Inspector Corey Zaharuk, who oversees the police bike patrol unit, highlighted Klein’s case as a powerful example of the value of bike patrol officers, especially during large public events.

“Our goal with them is to make sure that we are present during those crowd events to respond to whatever we need to respond to,” he said. “In this case, it was a male in medical distress.”
