SeaBus Passenger Hailed as a Hero After Saving a Life with CPR
A routine SeaBus trip quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency when a passenger suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest shortly after 8:45 p.m. while traveling from Waterfront Station. Thanks to the immediate actions of a fellow passenger, the man’s life was saved before paramedics arrived.
North Vancouver resident Brian Counihan, 41, did not hesitate when the emergency unfolded. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, he immediately began performing CPR and continued without stopping until emergency responders took over.
“I’m not very aware of how long everything took, or even what else happened around me,” Counihan later explained. His attention remained fully on the patient. It wasn’t until paramedics arrived that he looked up and realized the SeaBus had already been evacuated — a clear indication of how much time had passed.
Why CPR Training Matters
Counihan credits his ability to act quickly and confidently to first aid training. Reflecting on the experience, he strongly encouraged others to learn CPR and first aid, noting how essential those skills are in real-life emergencies.
“I’d encourage everyone to do first aid,” he said. “It’s made me realize how important it is, and I’ll likely do a refresher in the coming months.”
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere — on public transit, at work, or at home. Immediate CPR and early defibrillation using an automated external defibrillator (AED) significantly improve survival outcomes.
A Life Saved Through Quick Action
Thanks to the prompt delivery of CPR, the man made a full recovery. He was released from the hospital later the same day and has requested to remain anonymous.
This incident highlights a crucial reality: bystanders trained in CPR can be the difference between life and death while waiting for emergency services to arrive.
