Witnesses Commended for Life-Saving Actions After Fatal Plane Crash Near Jasper

Witnesses are being praised for their quick and decisive actions following a fatal plane crash near the Jasper townsite on Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the aircraft crashed into the Athabasca River shortly after taking off from the Jasper Airport. Emergency crews arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m. A 31-year-old passenger was pronounced dead, while the pilot was transported to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance in critical but stable condition.

The RCMP confirmed the plane experienced difficulties moments after takeoff.

“An aircraft was taking off eastbound, however it experienced difficulties and then crashed approximately one mile away from the airport,” said Const. Shelley Nasheim of the RCMP.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains unknown. Transport Canada has launched an investigation. The pilot and passenger were the only two people on board the aircraft.

Bystanders Step In to Help

RCMP officials stated that the immediate actions taken by witnesses at the scene likely played a key role in the rescue effort. Video footage obtained by CTV News Edmonton shows several people pulling a person from the water and beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency responders arrived.

Cpl. Chris Warren of the RCMP commended those who assisted.

“We can’t advise against putting yourself in harm’s way, but in situations where people have done their assessment and are able to help another human being, that is certainly applauded.”

Their response highlights the importance of early intervention during emergencies, especially when professional medical help has not yet arrived.

Why CPR Training Is So Important

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a critical life-saving skill that helps maintain blood flow and oxygen to vital organs during cardiac arrest or near-drowning incidents. In emergencies like this plane crash, trained bystanders can make a meaningful difference in the outcome.

Learning CPR and AED use prepares individuals to respond calmly, assess the situation safely, and provide immediate care when every second counts. If you want to be prepared to help in emergencies, consider enrolling in a CPR and AED training course.

Be Ready When It Matters Most

Emergencies can happen anywhere and without warning. Taking a CPR and first aid course gives you the confidence and skills needed to act quickly and potentially save a life before emergency services arrive.
