Deadly Head-On Collision in Abbotsford Highlights the Importance of First Aid Training

A tragic head-on collision in Abbotsford has left one man dead and another hospitalized, underscoring how quickly emergencies can occur—and how critical immediate first aid can be in those first moments.

The crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. on Friday night in the 2400 block of Whatcom Road. Two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in extensive damage and a swift emergency response. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles and were transported to hospital—one by ground ambulance and the other by air.

The driver who died was a 33-year-old man operating a Chevrolet Cavalier. He later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. At the scene, the driver’s side of the Cavalier was completely caved in, demonstrating the severity of the impact.

The second vehicle, a black Dodge Charger traveling northbound, was driven by a 21-year-old man. Debris from the collision was scattered across the roadway. The driver sustained a broken ankle and remains in hospital, where he is expected to recover.

Bystanders Provide First Aid Before Emergency Crews Arrive

Residents living along Whatcom Road rushed outside after hearing the crash and provided assistance to the injured drivers before emergency responders arrived. One local resident, Leland Klassen, described seeing neighbors already performing first aid at the scene and noticing a deployed airbag on the road.

This type of bystander response can be crucial. While professional help is on the way, early intervention—such as checking for breathing, controlling bleeding, or providing CPR when necessary—can help stabilize victims and improve survival outcomes.

Ongoing Police Investigation

The Abbotsford Police Department’s detectives and collision reconstruction team continue to investigate the crash. Alcohol and speed have not been ruled out as contributing factors. Whatcom Road was reopened to traffic the following Saturday morning.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information to contact Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
