Woman Dies After Being Pulled From Burning Toronto Home

An elderly woman has died after being rescued from a burning home in Etobicoke, following a serious residential fire Tuesday evening.

Emergency crews were dispatched to a house located at 371 Rathburn Road, near The East Mall, at approximately 8:11 p.m. after reports of flames coming from the basement. Firefighters arrived within minutes and encountered heavy smoke and intense flames coming from the lower level of the residence.

According to Toronto Fire Services, a man standing in the driveway alerted crews that someone was still inside the home and directed them toward the basement. Firefighters made immediate entry and found a well-involved basement fire.

Crews located the elderly woman inside and quickly removed her from the home. Once outside, firefighters immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before transferring her care to Toronto Paramedic Services. She was transported to a nearby hospital in life-threatening condition.

Shortly before 10 p.m., officials confirmed that the woman had succumbed to her injuries. Additional details about the incident were reported by CTV News, which noted that investigators believe the fire originated in the basement, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Investigators from Toronto Fire Services, the Office of the Fire Marshal, and Toronto Police are conducting a full investigation into the origin, cause, and circumstances of the fire. Authorities have stated there is no indication at this time that the fire is suspicious.

Fire officials also noted that basement fires are especially dangerous and difficult to combat, particularly during windy conditions, which may have intensified the blaze. No other injuries were reported, and a fire crew remained on scene overnight to monitor for hot spots.
