Police Investigating After Woman Killed in Forest Lawn

The Calgary Police Service homicide unit is investigating the suspicious death of a woman in the Forest Lawn community following a violent incident late Tuesday night.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of 42nd Street S.E. around 11 p.m. after reports of a woman in medical distress. Police initially knocked on the door of a nearby resident, Mike Carruthers, while searching for a possible stabbing victim. Aware of ongoing issues involving his neighbours, Carruthers directed officers next door, where they discovered a woman who had been seriously assaulted.

CPR Performed as Emergency Crews Responded

Ambulances and police cruisers quickly converged on the four-unit apartment building as officers secured the area. According to Carruthers, paramedics removed the woman from the residence on a stretcher while actively performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Emergency Medical Services confirmed the woman, who was in her 30s, was transported to hospital in serious condition with wounds described as “traumatic in nature.” Despite life-saving efforts, she later died. Her identity has not been released. An autopsy was conducted the following day as part of the homicide investigation.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Police circulated the area and took three people into custody for questioning. One man, identified as a member of the victim’s extended family, is facing murder-related charges. Investigators have not yet confirmed a motive.

Insp. Don Coleman stated that a social gathering was taking place inside the residence at the time of the incident. He noted that alcohol contributed to a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation, adding that children were present in the home. Police have also confirmed that a weapon was recovered and remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Community Concerns Raised

Carruthers told reporters that disturbances at the neighbouring unit were not uncommon. He said he had previously contacted police regarding noise complaints, large gatherings, and disruptive behaviour. According to him, prior tenants of the same residence were also linked to repeated police calls, including overdoses and violent incidents.

Police acknowledged they had been called to the address in the past and confirmed that some individuals involved were known to them on unrelated matters.
