Fan Suffers Cardiac Arrest at Senators Game, Taken to Hospital in Critical Condition
A medical emergency during Monday night’s Ottawa Senators game highlighted just how critical immediate CPR and AED access can be in saving a life.
A 77-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest during the first period of the Panthers vs. Senators game at Canadian Tire Centre. According to paramedics, the incident occurred suddenly in the stands, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Two Canadian Tire Centre staff members, along with a bystander, acted quickly by starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A publicly accessible automated external defibrillator (AED) was also used before paramedics arrived and took over care.
The man was transported to hospital in critical condition and was reported to be unresponsive upon arrival. The incident caused visible concern among both fans and players. With more than three minutes remaining in the first period, officials paused the game and sent both teams to their dressing rooms while emergency crews attended to the situation. The remaining time in the period was later added to the beginning of the second period.
According to the original report by CTV News Ottawa, the rapid response from staff and a bystander played a key role in providing immediate care before paramedics arrived. You can read the full original coverage here:

Why Immediate CPR and AED Use Matter
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen without warning, and survival depends heavily on how quickly help is provided. Immediate CPR helps circulate oxygen-rich blood to the brain and vital organs, while early defibrillation can restore a normal heart rhythm.
This incident demonstrates the importance of trained staff, accessible AEDs, and bystanders who are confident enough to step in before emergency medical services arrive. Those few minutes of early intervention can dramatically improve outcomes.
