CPR performed on the elderly after falling out of a window

A tragic incident at a Barrie care facility has left staff and the local community shaken after an elderly resident died following a fall from a second-storey window.

According to CTV Barrie, emergency crews were called to Barrie Manor on Blake Street just before 7 a.m. on Friday, July 26, 2019. An 89-year-old man was found on the ground below an open window. Paramedics immediately began CPR in an effort to save his life, but despite their efforts, the senior did not survive.

Facility Staff Devastated by the Loss

Staff at Barrie Manor described the incident as deeply distressing. Diana Boyse, speaking on behalf of the facility, said employees were devastated by the loss.

“It’s very devastating to us because we do everything we can to help the elderly,” Boyse said.

The man had been admitted to the facility just one day earlier after being released from hospital. Staff explained that he was experiencing extreme pain and that his family was unable to care for him at home. Barrie Manor operates as a transitional residence for individuals waiting to be placed in long-term care.

Police Investigation Underway

Barrie Police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the senior’s death. At this time, officers believe the incident was an accidental fall and have stated there is no indication of foul play.

Why CPR and AED Training Matters

This tragic event is a reminder that medical emergencies can happen suddenly and without warning. Immediate response—including early CPR and the use of an AED—can be critical in cardiac emergencies. While not every outcome can be changed, prompt action gives victims the best possible chance of survival.

Learning these lifesaving skills can make a real difference in emergencies at home, in public spaces, or in care settings. Those interested in building these skills can explore CPR and AED training courses offered by Winnipeg First Aid.
