Witnesses Commended for Life-Saving Actions After Fatal Plane Crash Near Jasper

One person has died and another remains in critical but stable condition following a small aircraft crash near the Jasper townsite on Sunday afternoon.

According to officials, the plane crashed into the Athabasca River near the Jasper Airport. Emergency crews arrived at the scene around 1:30 p.m., where a 31-year-old passenger was pronounced dead.

The pilot, whose age has not been released, was rescued from the river and transported to hospital by STARS in critical condition. Authorities later confirmed his condition was stable.

Crash Occurred Shortly After Takeoff

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the aircraft went down shortly after taking off eastbound.

“An aircraft was taking off eastbound, however it experienced difficulties and then crashed approximately one mile away from the airport,” said Const. Shelley Nasheim in a statement to CTV News Edmonton.

Only two people—the pilot and one passenger—were on board at the time of the crash. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by Transport Canada.

Bystanders Acted Quickly to Save a Life

RCMP officials praised the actions of witnesses at the scene, stating their quick response likely played a critical role in the pilot’s survival.

Video footage shows several people pulling the pilot from the water and immediately beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until emergency crews arrived.

“We can’t advise against putting yourself in harm’s way,” said Cpl. Chris Warren, “but in situations where people have done their assessment and are able to help another human being, that is certainly applauded.”

Why CPR Training Matters

This incident highlights how important CPR and first aid training can be during emergencies. When professional responders are still minutes away, immediate action by trained bystanders can mean the difference between life and death.

Learning CPR equips everyday people with the confidence and skills needed to respond during critical moments, whether the emergency happens on land or in water.

Those interested in learning these skills can explore CPR and AED training options through Winnipeg First Aid’s programs, designed to prepare individuals to act quickly and effectively in real-life emergencies.
