Pidwerbeski threw a rope to a struggling 13-year-old boy, dragging him through frigid six-foot waves toward their wind-battered rescue boat. The child was shivering, severely hypothermic, and unable to explain where the second boy had gone.

The officers rushed him back to shore, where he was immediately transferred to medical care. Without delay, they returned to the lake to search for the second child.

CPR in Rough Waters

Within minutes, the officers spotted a blue and yellow life jacket floating in the waves. As they maneuvered closer, a strong surge pushed the child farther away. Mann placed the boat in neutral and reached as far as he could to grab the life jacket, while Pidwerbeski held onto his partner to prevent him from being pulled overboard.

Despite the boat being violently tossed by waves, Mann immediately began CPR after pulling the child from the water. The officers rushed back to shore, but tragically, the eight-year-old boy could not be revived.

Recognized for Courage

In October, Pidwerbeski and Mann were among more than 30 Albertans honoured at a ceremony in Edmonton, where both received the Bronze Medal of Bravery from the Royal Canadian Humane Association.

Despite the recognition, Pidwerbeski emphasized that awards were never the motivation.

“It’s humbling beyond words. We don’t do what we do because we want recognition. It’s our job.”

He also shared that his thoughts remain with the family who lost their child, hoping they receive ongoing support during an unimaginably difficult time.
