A uniformed police officer was the first responder on scene and immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Paramedics soon arrived and continued life-saving efforts before transporting the child to Toronto East General Hospital. Sadly, despite rapid intervention, the child later died.

How Quickly Drowning Can Occur
Drowning often happens silently and within seconds, especially when young children are involved. Even in social settings where multiple adults are present, distractions can delay recognition of danger. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of constant supervision, pool safety measures, and emergency preparedness whenever children are near water.
Why CPR Training Matters
While CPR cannot always save a life, immediate CPR can significantly improve survival chances in drowning emergencies by restoring oxygen flow to vital organs. The first few minutes following a water-related incident are critical.
Learning CPR and AED use gives parents, caregivers, and bystanders the ability to act quickly and confidently in emergencies. Proper training ensures that life-saving care can begin before emergency responders arrive.
Residents looking to build these essential skills can explore CPR and AED training courses offered by Winnipeg First Aid, which focus on practical, hands-on instruction for real-life emergencies.
Be Prepared to Act
First aid and CPR training equips individuals with the knowledge to recognize emergencies early and respond effectively when every second counts. While tragedies like this cannot always be prevented, being trained can help reduce risks and potentially save lives in the future.
