Brothers, Ages 7 and 10, Perform CPR to Save Grandmother in Cardiac Arrest

On a quiet Saturday night in Saskatoon, seven-year-old Grayson Wu realized something wasn’t right. When his grandmother didn’t respond to his request for a snack, he looked over and saw her lying unconscious on the couch.

His older brother, 10-year-old Kian Wu, immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation. Their 62-year-old grandmother, Patti Chatterson, had suffered a massive heart attack and gone into full cardiac arrest shortly after they finished watching a movie together.

“She wasn’t breathing,” the boys later explained. Despite being frightened, they knew they had to act.

Acting Fast When Seconds Matter

The brothers first tried calling their parents, but when no one answered, Grayson dialed 911. While he spoke to the dispatcher, Kian immediately began chest compressions.

Following instructions from the 911 operator, the boys moved their grandmother from the couch to the floor. Kian continued strong chest compressions, while Grayson provided rescue breaths, exactly as they had been taught. Seven minutes later, paramedics arrived and took over care.

Their quick response helped keep their grandmother alive until professional help arrived.

How Two Children Learned CPR

Earlier that summer, the boys’ mother, Lee Chatterson Wu—a registered nurse—had shown them the basics of CPR. What began as a simple lesson turned into life-saving action when it mattered most.

This powerful story, originally reported by CBC News, highlights how early CPR education can prepare anyone to respond confidently during a medical emergency. You can read the full original report here:
