Police Watchdog Probes Third Naloxone-Related Death Involving Peel Officers

Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a third death in Peel Region involving police officers who administered naloxone while attempting to save a man’s life. The investigation is being conducted by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which oversees incidents involving police where serious injury or death occurs.

According to reporting by CBC News, the most recent incident occurred late Friday night at a residence on Main Street in Brampton. Peel Regional Police officers were called to the home around 11 p.m. and found a 50-year-old man in medical distress. Officers immediately began providing first aid and CPR and administered naloxone, an opioid-reversal medication commonly used in suspected overdose cases.

Police arrived on scene before paramedics and were already performing CPR when emergency medical crews took over care. The man was transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. More details about the SIU investigation and police response can be found in the original CBC News article:

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

The SIU has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case, and an autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. Peel Regional Police stated they are unable to comment further while the investigation remains active.

This marks the third SIU investigation in Peel Region involving naloxone administered by police. Two previous cases—one in Brampton and one in Mississauga—were later closed after investigators determined that police actions did not contribute to the deaths.
