Off-Duty Paramedics and Lifeguards Save 5-Year-Old Boy from Drowning

A family swim at a Langford aquatic centre quickly turned into a medical emergency when a five-year-old boy was pulled unconscious from a pool. Thanks to the fast actions of lifeguards and two off-duty paramedics, the child’s life was saved.

According to a report by CBC News, the incident occurred at the YMCA/YWCA in Langford, B.C., where lifeguards noticed the child in distress and immediately cleared the pool area.

Lifeguards Act Immediately

Lifeguards pulled the boy from the water and began CPR right away after determining he was unconscious and not breathing. Their quick response ensured lifesaving care started within seconds — a critical factor in water-related emergencies.

Off-Duty Paramedics Step In

Off-duty paramedics Kyle Klint and Karlie Wilson were at the pool with their four-year-old twin sons when they heard a lifeguard whistle signaling trouble. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the couple immediately offered their assistance.

Wilson began chest compressions while Klint managed the boy’s airway and provided ventilations.

“We were in the right place at the right time,” Klint told CBC. “We followed our training and kind of did what we’re supposed to, and it was a very positive outcome.”

A Highly Emotional Scene

Klint explained that pediatric emergencies are especially emotional for first responders. The boy’s mother was understandably distraught, and part of the response involved reassuring her and other bystanders while lifesaving care continued.

A Life Saved Through CPR

After approximately three to four minutes of CPR, the boy began breathing on his own and regained consciousness. By the time emergency crews arrived, he was awake and responsive. He was transported to hospital as a Precaution for further treatment.

Why CPR Training Matters

This incident highlights how quickly water emergencies can happen — even in supervised pool environments. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to closely supervise children, ensure weak swimmers wear life jackets, and call 911 immediately if a child is in distress.

Just as importantly, knowing CPR can save lives. Parents and community members can build these essential skills through CPR and AED training offered by Winnipeg First Aid.
