Fringe Performer’s Saskatoon Visit Takes a Life-Saving Turn

CPR is a vital life-saving skill that anyone can use in an emergency. During Saskatoon’s Fringe Festival, a routine afternoon quickly became a medical emergency when a street performer’s CPR training helped save a man’s life.

Chris Parsons, a Winnipeg-based street performer known as Chris Without the Hat, was visiting Saskatoon to perform at the Fringe Festival when he encountered an older man in serious distress. What followed was a powerful reminder of how important CPR training can be.

A Calm Response in a Critical Moment

Parsons had just stepped out of an antiques store on 33rd Street when he noticed a man struggling to breathe and turning blue in the face. Another bystander was attempting to help the man up, but it quickly became clear that the situation was becoming critical.

“I felt focused on the task at hand,” Parsons explained, crediting his CPR training for allowing him to stay calm and take control during the emergency.

At first, the man was able to sit up briefly with assistance, but moments later he collapsed back onto the ground. A bystander immediately called 911, and once the dispatcher learned that Parsons had CPR training, he was instructed to begin resuscitation.

CPR Made the Difference

By the time CPR began, the man was no longer breathing and had turned blue. Parsons started chest compressions and provided rescue breaths when he realized the man had completely stopped breathing. He continued CPR until the man began breathing again and maintained compressions until paramedics arrived.

“When I last saw him, he was breathing and being loaded onto a stretcher and into an ambulance,” Parsons said. “I assume he’s fine.”

His quick response and proper training played a critical role in keeping the man alive until emergency services took over. This incident was originally reported by CBC News, and you can read the full story here:

Why CPR Training Matters

As a performer who often works in front of large crowds, Parsons said he always believed CPR was an important skill to have. After this experience, he is even more convinced that everyone should learn it.

“I think everybody should get CPR training; I don’t think that should even be a question,” he said.

Medical emergencies can happen anywhere—on the street, at work, in public places, or at events. Knowing how to perform CPR can help keep someone alive until professional help arrives.

A Community Effort

While Parsons provided CPR, others nearby were also ready to help. Drivers slowed to offer assistance, and bystanders worked together to ensure emergency responders were guided quickly to the scene.

“The community really did come together here in Saskatoon,” Parsons shared.

This situation highlights how CPR training, quick thinking, and community action can work together to save a life.
