A 50-year-old man was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after being rescued from the basement of a Surrey home during a fire early Saturday morning. Despite emergency efforts, the man later died from his injuries.
House Fire in Surrey
Surrey firefighters responded to a house fire in the 15600 block of 82nd Avenue just after midnight. Crews discovered the man trapped inside a basement suite and quickly removed him from the home. CPR was immediately performed at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
According to BC RCMP, the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Investigators believe the blaze was likely caused by a lit cigarette. Officials also confirmed that the home’s smoke alarm had been disconnected and was found on top of the refrigerator. The upper level of the home did not sustain damage during the fire.
